WHISTLER BRITISH COLUMBIA

by Lorrie Orr

You won’t hear anyone say, “I’m bored” in family-friendly
Whistler, British
Columbia.
Skier or non-skier, the town offers an impressive list of activities
for anyone. From exciting glacier tours to relaxing family evenings,
Whistler
has it all. Choose accommodation ranging from private condo or townhome
rentals to luxury resorts or cozy bed and breakfasts. Friendly, helpful service
is a hallmark of Whistler hospitality.

Surrounded by some of the most spectacular scenery on the planet,
Whistler is the site of the skiing venues for the 2010 Olympic and
Paralympic Winter Games. It boasts some of the best skiing and
snowboarding in the world, with several international-caliber runs. Visitors
come from all over North America and Europe. Ski lifts and T-bars abound,
ready to take you to the top of sensational runs. Ski lessons are available for
all ages. For the more adventurous, heli-skiing trips onto glacier runs offer a
rush of adrenaline. Miles of nordic ski trails through pristine forests appeal
to others. This year, Blackcomb Mountain opens November 20th, and
Whistler Mountain, November 25th.

Take a break from skiing and visit the interpretive forest located 8 miles
south of Whistler. This self-guided tour is open year-round, with informative
signs to tell you about the flora and fauna of the area. This is excellent terrain
for hiking or snowmobiling. Pad through the forests on snowshoes just like
the First Nations people who lived here long ago. Tour ancient old growth
forests from the comfort of a heated snowcat.

Visit the world’s highest concentration of bald eagles. Take a tour bus to the
small town of Brackendale, just 45 minutes south of Whistler. They are best
seen between November and February. Watch these majestic birds swoop
from their high perches into the Squamish River for fresh salmon. An awe-
inspiring sight.

WHISTLER AREA ACTIVITIES
Riding along snowy lanes and through quiet forests on a horse-drawn
sleigh can either be a romantic interlude for two, or a family outing. Gentle
horses, melodious sleigh bells, and cozy blankets tucked around your legs
combine to make your sleigh ride magical. Prolong the experience with a
stop for hot chocolate around a glowing fire, or a gourmet fondue dinner.

An aerial sightseeing tour offers breathtaking views of the region. Inspiring
mountains, jewel-like lakes tucked into hidden valleys, and rivers rushing to
the ocean will delight your eyes. Small, picturesque villages tucked here and
there intensify the charming scenes.

All that outdoor activity can really whet the appetite.  From pizzerias to
gourmet dining,
Whistler has restaurants to satisfy everyone’s hunger.
Japanese, French, Italian and American cuisine are some of the flavors you
will find. Coffee shops, homey bakeries, cozy cafes where you can indulge in
homemade soup and pastries are perfect for lighter meals or snacks.

GETTING AROUND WHISTLER
Whistler is a vehicle-free village. There’s a free Village Shuttle, convenient
public transit system and lots of taxis to help you get around.  Wandering
through the village and shopping in the many unique shops is another way
to spend a day. Outstanding art galleries offer quality work in glass, metal,
ceramic and wood. Paintings and sculptures by local and regional artists
are available. From high fashion boutiques to simple gift shops, there’s
plenty to tantalize the eye.

After a busy, activity-filled day, what can be more relaxing than soaking gently
in a hot tub while breathing cold, crisp air, or having snowflakes fall upon
your head? Here the air is clear and stars shimmer in the dark skies. Laugh
and talk with your family in the enclosed world of warmth and steam.
